"Precious" Breaks Box Offices.... But is it Oscar Material?

While visiting New York last week, my cousin and I had planned to go and see the hyped-up movie "Precious." However, we were turned away at the door because the movie had been sold out for the rest of the day, including the 12:35 midnight showing of it.

It's obvious that the movie reached selling goals in theaters this past weekend (according to Essence.com, it brought in $104,000.00 per screen); but has the quality of the movie reached Oscar level material? Apparently, not. According to the LA Times some Oscar voters are not too thrilled about the movie. Emotions were quite clear at the premier screening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater (official academy screening) where guests were between at most 500 in a room that seats 1,000, writer Tom O'neil wrote.

As Essence Write Demetria Lucas puts it, "Is it possible the academy doesn't find anything precious about "Precious"?

When Oscar voters critique movies and decide whether it's Oscar worthy material, what all do they look for? What are the criterias? And whatever they are, did they actually even give the movie a chance?

Hopefully Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, along with the director, can explain the idea that is understandable and can hopefully win them an Oscar!
